Checking in is all well and good, but it’s important to be deeply self-critical and to examine all the ways that your life and your privilege have negatively affected Indigenous cultures and peoples. /continue to negatively affect to Standing Rock

Think about your money, your family, your family’s resources, wealth, education, and land — examine where these things come from, who was oppressed to accumulate that wealth, and how you can proactively work towards attempting to restructure a little bit of the power imbalance.

Checking in on facebook is easy. Checking in with yourself is harder. Do the harder thing.

And I’m still looking for people to actually travel to ND with either in November or early December. I realize that being able to take a week out of one’s life to go is a privilege that not everyone can afford, but it feels important — if you are interested in organizing something, please message or text me.Don’t do the first and not the latter. west elm victor

Yeah, I saw a few people start to check in a few days ago and was like, “Aww man everyone’s going without me.”

I definitely do think that it was awesome to sign in and see my feed full of DAPL conversation, even if just through a check-in, but there are so many studies that show that once people participate in any way, no matter how small, they feel like they’ve done their par , and are therefore less likely to take action in other ways, so I just worrystudy empty activism

I (maybe cynically, maybe realistically) believe that feel less pressure to take any other concrete actions, so I just worry. social activi

And then I realized what was happening.

I have both. You can venmo me!

Thank you! I really appreciate it.

No, I totally understand. I actually feel like it’s not about me either. I’ve been contacting Indigenous people I know and letting them know that if something gets organized (even if I organize it), and there’s not enough room for everyone to go, someone shoul definitely get my spot. It just feels…like there are these concentric circles, and maybe I’m a ring or two closer to the center than you, but I’m not in the center either, so we shoudl be doing all we can to get the people who are towards the center to Standing Rock.

Yeah. ANd the fact that it all happened simultaneously

It’s just like… Oh okay. So we aren’t even going to pretend

fffffffffffffffffcccccccvvvThe mission of The Coalition is to support white-idnetified people as they suffer through and attempt to navigate a world that increasingly limits their speech, privilege, and BLAH. They do this by doing community outreach that decenters their experiecnes so that white community members can more easily express, blah, blah.

Because The Coalition is full of members who are attempting to emulate white supremacist standards, they have modeled themselved after lah blah : corporate America.

For the first iteration of the project, I created an installation of bulletin boards, blah, blah, that mimicked the community taht is usually built out of subtle coercison and blah in corporate break rooms.

For the iteration at Open Engagement, The Coalition will attempt to recruit new members through the use of a vendor booth, like those found at conventions and conferences. The Coalition name will be printed on large vinyl, there will be free Coalition swag to be had, as well as enthusiastic recruiters that will have pamphlets, flyers, and informative literature to disseminate amongst the OE crowd.

The purpose of The Coalition is to make visible the invisible rolls that women and femmes of color are so often forced to play, even amongst well-intentioned white gorups that self-identify as . Exoticism and fetishization results in a blah blah blah. The Coalition brings humor, directness, and an absurdity to a topic that can seem so conviluted and difficult to discuss.
