There’s a sweetness and a purity to thw work that I’ve been making heere — sicklysweetnessthatisnotrepresentative of what I want to communicate, whatever that is
How do you take it outside of yourself? How do you bring in color from the found objects that you use?
How do you bring in the bitterness/the underlying rage/the sadness/the accumulation
What is the accumulation? What is it an accumulation of? Marks/trauma/thoughts/movements/motions/gestures/obsession/compulsion/what?

Thank you for this deep analytical answer to my kinda offhand question. This was actually really insightful/helpful fo.
re: sustainability of practice in Seattle
I think (because of the money, as you mentioned) there is a little bit more viability for a sustainable arts career here. We have a few commercial galleries that are well-liked on a national level and sell work really regularly to worldwide collectors. There are several artists (mid-career, established) who have really steady and successful careers, as well as a handful of emerging ones who are well on their way. I just think that the PNW is super sheltered and insular, which maybe isn’t the best thing for the work being made. It leaves a lot of room for interesting conversations and exploration, but I just wonder about the quality on a larger, national or global level. I don’t really know any other art scene, so I don’t have the perspective to know for sure — I was talking to a curator who moved to Seattle after growing up in Paris and working as a curator for a gallery in NYC for 10 or so years, and she agreed that Seattle isn’t competitive enough to encourage a lot of growth once you get to a certain level with your practice. She really encouraged me to apply to grad school or moving to the east coast.
re: pathways to success
Wow. You just made elusive art careers seem so concrete and achievable. All the things you said (the right group show the right residency,)r me , etc are fairly obvious when written down together like that, but I’ve never seen them written down in a list. It makes it seem… achievable almost.
I think this is true of Seattle as well. Maybe to a lesser degree, but yes. I often look at artists who are more established than me and think “okay, now what the fuck else are they going to do in Seattle?” Even for me, I have shown at a handful of places, and looking forward, there are maybe three galleries in Seattle where I would like to show that I haven’t shown. Or two curators who I haven’t shown with who I would like to work with. That seems… sad to me. But I don’t know. I also kind of love a lot of my community here. But. But. But. Everything is so confusing.
re: infastructure of ccollectors, curators, talented writers
Yeah, I do think that Seattle has a good amount of all of those types of people, four given its size, because of the wealth here, mostly. But I want more. More and more and more. (Mostly writers and curators — I should probably care about/know more about collectors, but ugh, whatever)
I don’t know. I think I’ll apply to grad school, apply to Skowhegan, maybe apply to one other residency, apply for a big fellowship, and keep working and keep my fingers doubel crossed for something to come through.e fellowship/grant that could give me around $15k
How’s the bookstore planning going? How is the fundraising? I keep meaning to donate money and then not doing it. I will. I promise.
