10 Satpreet Kahlon dr.sp 98199 9 263 92394 As I think about how I can be most useful to the Water Protectors, I go back and forth between what actions are responsible, respectful, and come from the best of intentions from a pure place. All morning, I’ve really been questioning

as I’ve been planning a trip to Standing Rock, my own motivations for going, and whether I would be more of a help or more of a strain on resources. I feel an undeniable pull to go and to help in any way possible, but it feels equally important to really examine that pull and whether it’s coming from a place that centers me or centers the Water Protectors and their cause.

It feels good to be planning the trip with other women of color, two of So basically, I’m feeling confused/overwhelmed and have a lot of thinking to do, but in the meantime (besides neglecting all my work), one action that feels important and good and simple is giving a little bit of money to help our Indigenous family members in whatever way they need.

Thank you so much for spending time with me and engaging me in such great conversation!

You did not seem insensitive when talking about sufferingyou brought up suffering. I’ve been thinking about that part of our conversation a lot recently,brittasince we had it. In the past six months or so, I have been trying to transcend talking merely about my own suffering, looking instead to overarching systems that my suffering is a symptom of (institutionalized racism, the erasure of indigenous cultures, etc). For me, The Coalition piece with the banners wasn’t just about my experience at my old studio building. That event was the catalyst for the piece, but the piece itself was about the overarching forces that foster that kind of hostile environment every day all over the country for women of color.

Hopefully with time, I will get better at focusing on those larger issues/themes.

Thank you for the resources, as well as for putting me in touch with Marisa. I remember seeing her piece in an article a year ago and really wo Wall Street Journal enjoying it — I look forward to meeting with her.

I don’t know if it was because I was coming straight from a residency wheand was in a super cerebral place, or if I wasn’t quite sure what the OSP Residency entailed, but yeah, I felt totally off my game in that meeting. or because my printer was at my residency and therefore I couldn’t print out and pass around the PDF that I sent you at the meeting, I just felt like I rambled and was scatter and felt super young.

It was a humbling experience for me, to say the least, to perform so underwhelmingly in front of so many reputable Seattle arts folks.

I would love to hear more about the panel’s feedback, although I’m a little bit scared, to be honest.
