I think about this issue a lot. Ultimately, I want PoC to be getting more opportunities, but there are fewer of us, we have limited resources and rarely are able to commit full-time to our craft, and these things leave the pool of readily available artists ) our communities are marginalized, which means that communication and organization is harder to achieve — ll of known artists of color much smaller, and with ultimately less experience than their white-presenting counterparts., education, and guidance
BUT, I don’t think the situation is hopeless. As I began to curate shows (Starting next month, I will be joining the Alice, and I also am curating a show at SOIL in July), I think I really want to focus on supporting artists of color who I think have a lot of potential but have maybe not have as much time/support in developing their work. I am trying to get funding for these shows so that I can compensate artists in a way that leaves them with a good amount of time to dedicate to creating new work, but I think the main thing that I can do is work with artists to be a temporary mentor of sorts. Not that I am super advanced in my career either, but I do think I have knowledge to offer.
I think this is the way we do it. Creating spaces for PoC is the first step, but then the second step is realizing that artists of color need different things than white-presenting artists — and learning how we can support each other so that our work can improve and shows like High Blood can be more successful and serious contenders in a larger art scene, racial issues present or not.onecan Hey Jenny,

moved the bed to the living room, getting rid of the couches and putting clothes and a table in the dining room, making the bedroom a studio/office — the space feels much better than it used to, but I wish we could pick it up and transplant it in basically any other neighborhood than magnolia. bummer.

Thank you for letting me know. I had put the paperwork and my studio rent check in on the same day, and when my landlord didn’t get my studio rent, I figured something was amiss. Luckily, I was able to cancel the check before the person was able to cash it.

Probably beneficial to also add: I am not super interested in teaching post-MFA, My goal in getting my MFA is to be engaging in rigorous critical conversation about my work and others’ significantly speed up the process of placing my work in a contemporary art context by being give — not in it to become commercially successful or to teach — to gain “star power” or obviously wouldn’t turn down any of these things, but not really my goal. in a community that is just as serious about their work as I am
